The Atlantic Tarpon was completed on 6.21.09. The
original ink drawing was completed in 2007. I didn't
know much about these fascinating fish, but as with all
animals I draw when I study the physical characteristics
of them I try to learn about their habits and behaviors
as well. Tarpons are popular with fisherman and their
tenacity is famous. I hope I have been able to capture
this in the drawing.

The Giant Grouper was completed on 6.20.09. I've
recently gotten into scuba diving, so my interest in
animals I'll likely see has grown a good deal. We
recently went to the California Academy of Sciences and
saw the Giant Sea Bass (which I'll be drawing shortly)
and it inspired me to create an illustration of a large
saltwater fish. I picked the Giant Grouper.

The Yosemite Toad was completed on 6.17.09. It's my goal
to draw all of the amphibians in the state of
California. I'm not sure I'll make it, but here's
another gorgeous toad to add to the library. The drawing
is based on a photo by Rob Bingham.

The Spotted Turtle was completed on 6.11.09. I had been
meaning to draw one of these handsome reptiles for some
time. I visited the Oakland Zoo one morning and made
some photos studies of their resident Spotted Turtles
that live in the new reptile and amphibian house.
Luckily they were both basking out on logs which gave me
a good opportunity to study them.

The Nine-Banded Armadillo was completed on 6.07.09. The
black and white version of this image was created back
in 2007 for a project for a park in San Antonio that
was, unfortunately, shelved after I had completed it. I
have never seen an armadillo in the wild but as I travel
to Texas fairly often I'm hopeful I will be able to some
day.

The Coyote was completed on 6.05.09. I had a
wonderful close encounter with a coyote in Palm Springs
a few years ago and since then I have wanted to
illustrate one. The coyote followed me and my dog Escher
- who was very interested in it but I made him keep his
distance. I also sometimes see them in the regional
parks when hiking. The drawing is based on a photo by
David Tunick.

The Malachite Butterfly was completed on 6.02.09. This
is the first foreshortened drawing of a butterfly I've
done - usually butterflies are drawn straight from the
side with wings up or straight on from the back. I came
across the Malachite Butterfly while researching a
project for Scholastic Books last fall. After then I had
decided I wanted to create a drawing of these gorgeous
creatures. The illustration is based on a photo by A.J. Haverkamp. |
