Artist's notes:
The
Marine Iguana was completed on 11/02/2008. It is based on
a photo by J. Burwell. This drawing was really a challenge
due to mottled coloration of the iguana. It was tricky getting
the colors just right. As this species is a favorite of
mine, and perhaps the unofficial 'mascot' of the Galapagos
Islands, I wanted to make sure I gave it my best shot. I
think it turned out to be one of my better drawings. I have
never been to the Galapagos Islands, but I hope to travel
there one day and see these remarkable sea-going reptiles
in their native habitat.

Information about the Marine Iguana:
The Marine Iguana, also called the Galapagos Marine Iguana,
is a large lizard that is found only on the islands of the
Galapagos. What makes it nearly unique among modern lizards
is the ability to swim and forage for food in the ocean.
These reptiles live on almost all of the islands in the
archipelago. The Marine Iguana spends most of it's time
on the rugged and rocky shoreline of the Galapagos Island,
but it occasionally can be located in marshes of the interior
and the mangrove beaches.
