Artist's notes:

timber or gray wolf thumb The Caribou was completed on 1.31.10. I was confused as I was unaware that caribou and reindeer were the same animal. Well, after sorting that out I did some sketches and studies of these animals at the Natural History museum of Los Angeles where they have a nice, well lit exhibit of these impressive ungulates. The drawing is the result.

Information about the Caribou:

The Caribou - or Reindeer when in captivity - is an arctic and subarctic deer, which is commonly found in the various arctic terrains of Canada, Alaska, Scandinavia, Greenland and Siberia. They are mainly herbivores, feeding on moss, lichens and other plant materials such as leaves, stems, mushrooms and grasses. They are large animals, weighing up to and over 350 pounds growing to over six feet in length. Domesticated reindeer are shorter and heavier then their counterparts in the wild. Caribou have the largest antlers relative to body size among deer. Caribou are ruminants having a four chambered stomach.
