Insects are the largest class of arthropods and the most diverse group of animals on earth. There are over one million species that have been described which is more than half of the all the known living organisms. Estimates of as yet undescribed species range as high as perhaps 30 million which would mean Class Insecta would represent over 90% of the differing life forms on planet earth. Insects can be divided into two groups: Agterygota (wingless) and Pterygota (winged.) Insects are found in nearly all environments, although there are only a few that occur in the world's oceans.  Insect's bodies are generally made up of segments supported by an exoskeleton, which is a hard outer shell that protects the animal. These segments include the head, thorax and abdomen. Most insects hatch from eggs, but a few are viviparous which means the animal develops inside the mother's body. Size of insects range greatly as well from the fairyfly which is .00547 inches to 22 inch stick insects. The mammoth Goliath Beetle is probably the largest and heaviest at 2.5 ounces.
