Artist's notes:
 The
Stag Beetle was one of a series of five beetles I drew in
2005 (color was added in 2007.) I love their massive pincers
and deep red-brown coloration. They remind me of the 'junebugs'
I used to see in the Mid-west where I grew up.

Information about the European Stag Beetle:
The European Stag Beetle is of one the best know beetles
of the family Lucanidae. They are native to west, south
and central Europe. They live in old rotting trees and dead
tree trunks which they also feed on. They were once very
common throughout Europe, but now due to habit loss they
are in steep decline and special measures are being taken
to set aside special areas of conservation for them.
