Artist's notes:

black widow spider thumb This was the first non-tarantula spider I had drawn. I wasn't sure how it would look, because Black Widows are basically all black except for the 'hourglass' red markings on the abdomen. I got a little creative with the highlights and had some fun with the web. I think it turned out fairly well.

Information about the Black Widow Spider:

The Black Widow Spiders are found in many areas of North America. They are famous for their venom - which is more potent than that of many poisonous snakes such as the cobra. Contrary to popular belief, the males are not always consumed after mating, but it does often happen. The spiders have been accidentally introduced into Sweden and Denmark and have established themselves in those areas.
